Ann Crane studied art with the Impressionist John Henry Twachtman, whose appreciation for winter landscapes she shared. In "Winter Light," Crane layers pigment heavily on her canvas, creating complex textures that evoke the surface of accumulated snow and ice. The artist, who was married to the Old Lyme painter Bruce Crane, reportedly disliked the atmosphere of the Connecticut art colony, where she felt it was difficult to establish an identity separate from that of her husband. Instead, Ann Crane spent the majority of her time at the family’s farm in Utica, New York.
