Olinsky emigrated to the United States from his native Russia in 1891 at the age of thirteen. He studied at the National Academy of Design with J. Alden Weir, Robert Vonnoh, and others, and then later served as an apprentice to John LaFarge at the Art Students League in New York. He earned considerable recognition as both a portraitist and as a teacher. His portraits were awarded numerous exhibition prizes from the National Academy, Allied Artists of America, and Lyme Art Association.
