This wooden tea box is covered with hand-painted paper on all sides. The design is oriental showing flowers, butterflies, oriental motifs in red, black and green. One side reads, "Panama NL and GG Extra Fine Powchong Mouqua No.3." One historian noted that tea boxes marked "Panama NL & G Griswold" were staple items in most grocery stores.
This box would have carried tea from China to New York on the ship Panama for the shipping line of No Loss and Great Gain Griswold (Nathaniel L. and George) who were very successful importers during the China trade. They were uncles of Robert Harper Griswold, Florence Griswold's father.
