A native of Hartford, Connecticut, Allen Butler Talcott studied briefly with Dwight Tryon, whose influence is suggested by the compositional spareness and color harmonies of "Sunset after Storm". Talcott's successful career was cut short by his untimely death at 41. While he is often associated with the American Barbizon painters, he also painted with the brighter palette of the Impressionists. He attained professional recognition in 1893 at the Paris Salon with European scenes; later his work showed his deep appreciation of nature and a love for his native Connecticut landscape.
