"Sunset Over the Marsh" is one of Talcott's major works from the 1890s. The exact location is unknown, although it is probably a scene in France where Talcott lived for much of the 1890s. A native of Hartford, Connecticut, Talcott studied briefly with Dwight Tryon, whose influence is suggested by the compositional spareness and color harmonies of "Sunset Over the Marsh".
